serving our neighbors
Berkeley is very active in missions throughout our community. Here is but a portion of what we are doing.
Work Corner Ministry
Berkeley United Methodist Church has been participating in the Work Corner for at least 15 years. Members volunteer and come to the Christian Life Center on rotating Sundays at 6:00 am to cook 180 eggs and heat up 360 tortillas. At approximately 7:30 am, they pack up those items and head up to 7th Street near I-35, where they serve breakfast to an average of 90 people. Other members participate by purchasing and delivering the eggs/tortillas to the CLC on Saturdays. Gift bags are put together by the United Methodist Women and other members for Christmas. New volunteers and donors are always welcome!
The Work Corner Ministry was originally started by Lynn Goodman Strauss, founder and a permanent community member of Mary House Catholic Worker. Berkeley United Methodist Church eventually took on the responsibility of continuing her labor of love on Sundays. A YouTube video about Lynn Goodman Strauss is available online and features some of Berkeley’s original participants. For more information, contact the office.
Local Schools Outreach
The church is actively committed to supporting the students and staff at Cunningham elementary across the street. As well, our church supports Widén Elementary in East Austin with fundraisers, volunteering, and other efforts. For more information, contact the office.
Plus 1 Utility Support
Berkeley UMC was recently approved for a grant from the City of Austin to become an assistance provider in the Financial Support Plus 1 Program. Serious illness, a recent job loss, or other emergencies can make it difficult for some customers to pay their utility bills. The Plus 1 fund helps by providing emergency financial aid to customers who are having a temporary problem paying their utility bills.
Berkeley United Methodist Church will offer assistance on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at 1pm. Austin Energy customers needing financial assistance with their bill should arrive at Berkeley UMC between 1:00 and 1:15pm on those Tuesdays with their I.D. and a copy of their Austin Energy bill.
If you would like to know more, or are interested in volunteering please email email@example.com or call 512-447-6633.
Austin Free Store
Our members participate the UMC Capital District Ministry of the Austin Freestore. There are volunteer opportunities on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. For more information, check out the Freestore website.
Kairos is an international, interdenominational Christian ministry addressing the spiritual needs of incarcerated men, women, youth, and their families. By sharing the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ, Kairos hopes to change hearts, transform lives, and impact the world. “Kairos” is a Greek word meaning “God's Special Time.”
Torres houses about 1400 men at all but the highest level of custody. Most of the volunteers who serve at the Torres Unit live in the San Antonio area.
What sets Kairos apart from other prison ministries is our consistent presence in the unit. Kairos has many activities: Two three-day-weekend events (Thursday evening – Sunday afternoon) a year; two two-day-weekend events (Saturday-Sunday) a year, for which any man who has attended a three-day is eligible; a reunion of Kairos participants on the second Saturday of each month; and a weekly “Prayer and Share” at which Kairos participants gather in small accountability groups. For more information, contact the office.
